You, Me and Dupree

I watched You, Me and Dupree tonight. If you were watching TV tonight you would know I saw it on TBS. I am not going to lie, this was one that I wasn't interested in seeing when it came out in theaters. However, free on TV, can't go wrong. It wasn't the best movie I have ever seen but it had its moments.

The movie was written by Michael LeSieur and directed by Anthony and Joe Russo. The movie stars Owen Wilson, Kate Hudson, Matt Dillon, Michael Douglas, and Seth Rogen.

Carl (Matt Dillon) falls in love with Molly (Kate Hudson). Carl and Molly get married. Molly's father Mr. Thompson (Michael Douglas) is super protective of his daughter. She is his only child and Molly's mother has passed away. Carl asks Dupree (Owen Wilson) to be his best man. Dupree is a crazy nomad of sorts who means well but often gets himself in troublesome situations. Carl works for Mr. Thompson and Mr. Thompson makes his life hell at work. As a matter of fact, Mr. Thompson pursues every avenue possible to split Carl and Molly up. Tensions start to arise between Molly and Carl. Carl is suffering at work because of Mr. Thompson but Molly wants to defend her dad. Dupree is causing all sorts of mayhem while he is temporarily staying at Carl and Molly's house. Even to the point that Carl is suspicious Dupree is trying to get frisky with Molly. Carl loses it and decides to take off for a couple of days. Dupree sees the problems he has been causing and vows to do what it takes to get Carl back and help Carl and Molly resolve the problems they've been having. Dupree is able to track Carl down and helps him confront Mr. Thompson. Carl successful confronts Mr. Thompson. With Dupree and Mr. Thompson on Carl's team, Carl returns home to work things out with Molly. I'm sure you can guess the ending from here.

Like I said earlier, the movie isn't the greatest. It does have its moments and some of those moments are pretty funny. It is a fun little movie to watch if you feel like laughing. It would also be perfect if your significant other requires a chick flick out of you from time to time. It's perfect because you get the chick flick romance side but you also get plenty of laughs. Chick flicks are best when the romance is balanced out with something like comedy.

Other information:
Owen Wilson's next project to be released is Night at the Museum: Battle at the Smithsonian.
Matt Dillon is starring in a movie titled Old Dogs alongside John Travolta and Robin Williams.
Michael Douglas is in Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, which is being released this next weekend.

Get Smart

Tonight I watched Get Smart. It is funny but completely ridiculous. It is one of those movies that you have to take at face value. You have to enjoy it for entertainment purposes ONLY! It was funny because I kept catching myself saying, "yeah right", "whatever", "like that would happen", etc. It was funny though and the movie tried to keep the spirit of the original Get Smart franchise.

The movie was directed by Peter Segal. The cast included Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway, Alan Arkin, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, and Bill Murray (in a small role).

I am not going to give a detailed synopsis. Chaos has nuclear weapons and threatens to blow up the world unless paid. Control tries to stop them. Max Smart (Steve Carell) falls for Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway) in the process. Agent 23 (Dwayne Johnson) has some tricks up his sleeve and turns sour on everyone. And the whole motley crew is supervised by the Chief (Alan Arkin). Oh, and, the good guys win and the bad guys lose.

I don't know how hardily I would recommend this movie. If you are looking for slapstick humor mixed in with action this is the movie for you. If you are looking for something serious or even plausible this is not the movie for you. If it is late for you and you want something silly (like UHF at 3:00 AM) this is DEFINITELY the movie for you. So, pick your poison.

Kingdom of Heaven

Kingdom of Heaven is tonight's feature. It was directed by Ridley Scott (of Gladiator fame). The movie starred Orlando Bloom, Jeremy Irons, Liam Neeson, and Edward Norton namely.

It is a historic action movie (obviously with artistic license woven into the script) centered around one of the holy wars between Christians and Muslims that was fought in and around Jerusalem. Balien de Ibelin's (Orlando Bloom) wife commits suicide. The priest who presides at her funeral desecrates her body because she is going to hell because she committed suicide. Balien finds out and kills the priest in revenge. As a result of killing the priest the church sends troops to bring him to justice. In the midst of all this Balien's father Godfrey de Ibelin (Liam Neeson) shows up and invites Balien to join him in the holy war. Balien accepts and starts his journey to Jerusalem. His father dies in route and Balien inherits his father's land and title. Due to his new title and some amazing acts of courage on the battlefield during his journey to the holy land he catches the King's (Edward Norton) attention. He stands out as noble amongst the hatred and corruption. The King commands him to serve the crown and the idea of Christianity. With the help of Tiberias (the second in command in Jerusalem behind the King) he picks up the cause in order to try and absolve himself from the murder he committed against the priest. Of course the other nobles who have been there longer have a problem with his chosen favor over them in the eyes of the King. The King dies before Balien's position is solidified and the other nobles vote to go to war over the King's dying wishes. The campaign can't be successful but the nobles fool themselves into believing their faith will overcome the odds. Balien is opposed to the foolish campaign but goes because of the oath he took. He is the only one who really leads his troops to victory. The campaign is still a monumental failure and the remnants of the army are forced back to the fortifications at Jerusalem. Upon the impending doom posed by the Muslims who lay siege to Jerusalem all the other nobles and religious leaders abandon the fight and flee. Balien has to take over the army and defend Jerusalem. He does so in such a successful and courageous manner that he wins favorable surrender terms from the Muslims.

Obviously the idea of Christianity vs. Islam is explored in the movie. There is also much discussion on loyalty, honor, integrity, etc.

I recommend this movie as an interesting entreaty on the history and motifs behind the holy wars. It is also a pretty good drama along the way. Plenty of action and battles. Also the trebuchets are cool. The only warning I would give you is that the movie is about 3 hours long. So, if you don't have the stamina to watch a 3 hour movie, wait until you do. The movie is great but you won't enjoy it if you watch the movie in two sessions or if you lose interest half way through because you didn't understand the length of the movie.

Other information:
Ridley Scott is currently filming his take on Robin Hood. The movie stars Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett.
Liam Neeson's newest movie is being released in October. It is called After Life.

Lost in Translation

Lost in Translation is a great movie. So great I am going to make it my post tonight.

I feel personally drawn to this movie for several reasons. First the movie slogan is awesome (Everyone wants to be found). Second, I have traveled across the globe on numerous occasions going from The States to Hong Kong. I know what it feels like to be jet lagged and "lost in translation" when you get to your foreign destination. Third, having lived in Hong Kong makes me appreciate the asian oddities that they highlight in the movie. Hong Kong is not Japan, but there are quite a few similarities. You may not be able to totally appreciate the tone that Sofia Coppola creates in the movie until you have endured a 24 hour flight to a EXTREMELY foreign country. That is a jet lag you have never experienced. And in that severe a case of jet lag everything becomes surreal without any help.

Lost in Translation was written and directed by Sofia Coppola. The movie includes Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson, Giovanni Ribisi, and Anna Faris.

Bob Harris (Bill Murray) is a celebrity who is shooting a comercial in Tokyo for a Japanese whiskey company. As the movie unfolds it becomes apparent that his relationship with his wife and family is very stressed. At the same hotel where Bob Harris is staying is another young couple. The husband is a photographer (Giovanni Ribisi) and the wife (Scarlett Johansson) is accompanying her husband for the week of the photo shoot. Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) is newly graduated from Yale and newly married. She is having a hard time, especially alone in Tokyo while her husband is working, and is unsure of why she got married. Bob Harris and Charlotte end up spending more and more time together as a distraction from their respective currently crappy relationships/lives. They end up in some pretty weird circumstances as they explore the city together. They both struggle to not cross the line as they try and sort out their respective emotions.

There are some classic scenes from the movie. One involves a prostitute that the director of the commercial sends to Bob Harris' hotel room. She states that she is there to give him a "premium fantasy" upon her arrival at his hotel room. Her english is horrible and her definition of a fantasy is extremly eastern. It is crazy and embarrassing. Bob Harris just wants to get away but she won't let him. A second one is with the director of one of Bob Harris' commercial shoots. The director is trying to give Bob instructions on what to do. He talks for 5 minutes and the translator only translates 2 words to Bob Harris. Bob then responds with 2 words and the translator talks to the director for 5 minutes. Bob keeps asking if there is anything else that is being said because the Japanese to English is so disporportionate. If you have ever translated or had someone translate for you, you will appreciate the scene.

Anyway, I recommend the movie because it accurately addresses how most of us feel from time to time...lost in this big world of ours. Sometimes the feeling of being lost is exaserbated while in certain circumstances (like flying to Tokyo and being completely jet lagged). It's theraputic to know you aren't the only one who can feel lost in the world. It is also important to understand and appreciate having someone or someones in your life that make you feel completely comfortable with who you are.

Other information:
Sofia Coppola was nominated for an Oscar for Best Director for Lost in Translation.
Sofia Coppola is the daughter of Francis Ford Coppola and the cousing of Nicolas Cage.
If you want some more information on Bill Murray check out my post on The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.
Scarlett Johansson was cast as Black Widow in Iron Man 2.
Giovanni Ribisi is going to be in a slew of good movies coming out soon. Most notably Public Enemies with Johhny Depp and Christane Bale and Middle Men with Luke Wilson and James Caan. I really want to see Public Enemies when it comes out.

Death Proof

I've been a little nervous to take on a Quentin Tarantino movie. Tonight's the night, though. I decided to expose Death Proof because I consider it a middle of the road Tarantino movie. By middle of the road, I mean amongst Tarantino movies.

Of course, Death Proof, was written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. Tarantino also has a small role in Death Proof just like in most of his other movies. The cast consists of Kurt Russell, Rosario Dawson, Zoe Bell, Vanessa Ferlito, Sydney Poitier, Tracie Thoms, Rose McGowan, Jordan Ladd, Mary Winstead, and of course Quentin Tarantino.

The movie isn't very sophisticated. A man (Kurt Russell) follows around groups of girls and tries to kill them. They don't give a motive or anything. He just follows different groups of girls around and tries to kill them. The movie is broken down into two different group of girls. One he successfully kills and the other not. All of the action consists of car chases. And, it wouldn't be a Tarantino flick with out the static scenes full of crazy dialogue.

If you haven't seen this movie go check it out. It is classic Tarantino. It is gory as hell (the way some of the people die in the movie is UNREAL!!!!!). It has amazing cars. ETC., ETC., ETC. I really enjoyed all of the references in the movie to Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Kill Bill Vol. 2. A girl in the movie gets a call on her cell phone and the ring tone is the Kill Bill music. One of the cars that a group of girls had had a bumper sticker on it that said "Lil Pussywagon". Amongst other references. Anyway, go check it out. If you really enjoy gory deaths this movie is for you.

Other information:
Quentin Tarantino's newest movie is Inglorious Basterds. The movie is set to be released in August of this year. It is going to star Brad Pitt, Samuel L. Jackson, Diane Kruger, Mike Myers, and Cloris Leachmen. It is odd that Mike Myers (Austin Powers) is going to be in a Tarantino film but I am excited to see it none-the-less.
Zoe Bell is a real life stuntman and is featured as herself in the movie. Very clever. She did stunts for Kill Bill Vol. 1 and Kill Bill Vol. 2. She has enjoyed some success as an actress since the release of Death Proof.
Rose McGowan and Rosario Dawson have signed on to do Sin City 2. All I can say about that is, interesting.

Catch Me If You Can

Catch Me If You Can is a Spielberg movie starring Tom Hanks, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Christopher Walken.

It is based on the true story of Frank Abagnale Jr. (played by DiCaprio) and the screenplay was written based off of Frank Abagnale Jr's book.

The story is relatively simple. Carl Hanratty (Tom Hanks) is a federal agent who tracks down check fraud. Frank Abagnale Jr. (Leonardo DiCaprio) is the son of a prosperous local merchant, Frank Abagnale Sr. (Christopher Walken). Frank Sr. impresses on his son that the only respect you should seek after comes with being monetarily successful. However, Frank Sr. starts to lose his prosperity as his industry becomes obsolete. To compensate he cheats on his taxes and as a result gets audited by the IRS. He also loses his wife to the richest local man in Frank Sr.'s community. Frank Jr. believes that everything, including his father's dignity and respect, will be restored if he makes enough money. Frank Jr. gets a checking account with $20 in it, checks and all, from Frank Sr. as a 18th birthday gift. Frank Jr. runs away to find his fortune and buy his father's life back. However, things are harder than he expects. He starts to cheat with his checks until that is shut down. Frank Jr. starts to learn everything he can about checks and begins to forge checks. As he gets better and better at it the more and more money he makes. As he becomes a pro he comes into the crosshairs of Agent Hanratty. And thus the chase begins. The chase is extreme and takes them across the globe with several close encounters. Agent Hanratty finally catches Frank Jr. The feds offer Frank Jr. a job catching other check fraud perpertraters in exchange for probation. Frank Jr. accepts and works with Agent Hanratty catching check fraud crooks.

In real life the success of Frank Jr. and Agent Hanratty was remarkable. After his probation, Frank Jr., worked with corporations and the banks in beefing up check protection features. Most of today's check protection features are the products of Frank Abagnale Jr.

I enjoy the fact that this movie is based on a true story. I also like the thrill of the chase and the bravado of the criminal. Frank Abagnale Jr. was one smart cookie to have avoided the full attention of a division of federal agents.

I recommend this movie because of the history, the intelligence, and the thrill of the movie subject.

Other information:
Tom Hanks newest movie is Angels and Demons. It is the latest movie by Ron Howard adopted from Dan Brown's book of the same title.
Leonardo DiCaprio will star in a movie titled Shutter Island which is being directed by Martin Scorsese. After the success of Leonardo and Scorsese in The Departed I am excited to see this one.
Chrisopher Walken's newest movie to be released is The Maiden Heist. It will also star Morgan Freeman and William H. Macy. This movie also looks interesting.

House M.D.

Tonight's entry is going to be dedicated to House M.D. For all those of you who don't know what House M.D. is, it is a show on the Fox channel on Monday nights.

It is about a genius doctor who also happens to be a miserable jerk. He is the world's best diagnostician and solves medical cases that no one else can. He is constantly fighting with the hospital administrator. He has a team of doctors that work for him and one sole friend.

The medical cases are incredibly interesting, the acting is superb, the show is immensely intelligent, the relationships between the characters are witty, and there is always a perfect dose of comedic drama. Dr. House always says what is on his mind (no matter how much of a jerk he is), which honestly, I think we all wish we could do from time to time. So that also makes the show appealing.

The cast currently consists mainly of Hugh Laurie (Dr. House), Lisa Edelstein (Dr. Cuddy), Robert Sean Leonard (Dr. Wilson), Omar Epps (Dr. Foreman), Jennifer Morrison (Dr. Cameron), and Jesse Spencer (Dr. Chase).

I always hesitate to recommend TV shows because they are an ongoing production. Movies tell there entire story in the length of the movie. Whereas TV shows have multiple episodes over several seasons. What ends up happening is you can get a bad episode, get lost in a story line (because you haven't seen the previous episodes), etc. So, I want to recommend this show to everyone. However, I can only guarantee my recommendation in the spirit in which I give it if you watch the show from episode 1, season 1. Anyway, you might enjoy it if you just jump into it. I just wanted to make sure I put in my disclaimer.

Other information:
Hugh Laurie is really British. You wouldn't be able to tell because his American accent is superb on the show. As a matter of fact, original director Bryan Singer, didn't know he was British when the show cast Hugh Laurie as Dr. House.
Jennifer Morrison is hot. Watch the show for that reason if you want. I even think she looks better with each season.
Omar Epps' character, Eric Foreman, shares the same name as Topher Grace's character on That 70's Show.

Collateral

I want to do a good action movie tonight. Collateral is my favorite action, thriller movie. I could watch this movie 1,000 times and have probably come close. It's that good.

It is a Michael Mann movie (Heat, Last of the Mohicans). The cast includes Tom Cruise, Jamie Foxx, Jada Pinkett Smith, Mark Ruffalo, and Javier Bardem (No Country for Old Men). I don't normally enjoy Tom Cruise's more current work, but this movie was an exception. He did a great job convincing you that he is a hard core killer. This is going to sound stupid but this movie is amazing because in the characters actually reload in the middle of gun battles. They did a great job trying to be authentic and that goes a long way in my book. There is nothing more that I hate than a gun battle between two guys with pistols shooting at each other 100 times a piece without reloading (Face Off).

The movie is about a cab driver, Max (Jamie Foxx) who picks up a fare, Annie (Jada Pinkett Smith) and they really hit it off. After Max drops Annie off (turns out Annie is a prosecutor) he picks up another fare, Vincent (Tom Cruise). Max takes Vincent to his destination and Vincent pays Max to wait outside while Vincent hurriedly takes care of some business. As Max waits a man suddenly falls on his cab. Vincent is blown (as he killed the guy) and forces Max to continue as his driver. Vincent has 4 more hits before he plans on killing Max and skipping town. One of his hits is Annie. Annie is prosecuting the drug lord who hired Vincent to kill her and the other major witnesses in his trial. Max heroically does everything he can to stop Vincent but it isn't very easy.

If you are looking for a good action movie with tons of realistic fighting and killing of bad guys with a hot chick (Jada Pinkett Smith is something else, you know?!?) then I recommend this movie. I can't praise it enough. You need to check it out to see how awesome this movie really is.

Other Information:
Jamie Foxx is currently starring in The Soloist with Robert Downey Jr.
Tom Cruise's latest was Valkyrie.
Javier Bardem will star in a movie titled Biutiful that is being released in December (and, yes, I spelled the movie title right).
Javier Bardem makes me think I should do a Coen Brother's Week. That would be cool, but intimidating. I don't want to do them or their movies any injustice since they are both the coolest. I'll think about it.
Michael Mann's newest project is a movie titled Public Enemies that is going to be released in July. It stars Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. It looks like it is going to be awesome. I am going to put Public Enemies on my to watch list.

Nostalgia

I am feeling a bit nostalgic tonight. I am going to go to Dallas soon and I have decided to drive. I have to make the trip in my Corolla. It is only a four cylinder. Gets great gas mileage but it isn't the funnest thing to drive on the highway. It started to make me think about my previous ride, my old 2004 Ford Mach 1 Mustang.

I loved my Mach 1. It was fast, it looked cool, it had a premium interior package, the works! I am sad that I won't have it for the trip. Just think how fast I could make the trip with that V8 305 HP beast of a car.

Oh well, the past is the past. This picture is not my Mach 1, but mine looked just like it.

The Squid and the Whale

Tonight we will be featuring an independent film titled The Squid and the Whale. I mentioned this movie in my post about The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou because the writer of Life Aquatic is the writer and director of this movie. So, The Squid and the Whale was written and directed by Noah Baumbach. This guy is talented. I wish he had more out there either written or directed by him. He just has a way of depicting life that is unique to him. The movie is a comedic drama. Although it is heavy on drama and light on comedy.

The movie has a stellar cast as well. The cast includes Jeff Daniels, Laura Linney, Owen Kline, Jesse Eisenberg, William Baldwin, and Anna Paquin.

This is one of those movies where you have to watch it more than once to fully appreciate it. So, if you think I am crazy for recommending it after you watch it, you will have to be patient enough to watch it twice. Now, you could be way smarter than me and fully appreciate it with just one watch. It is a story about a family and all the drama that each family member struggles with. What is unique about the movie is that each family member is in a very different place in their life. So, their drama is unique from each other. However, because they are a family and ultimately care for each other; everybody's drama affects everybody else as a team as well. The father (Jeff Daniels) is a genius professor who is suffering a professional slowdown. His insecurity about this slump drives him to divorce. It also causes him to alienate his sons. His main problem is that he has to make everyone close to him feel stupid so that he can feel superior. The mother (Laura Linney) has lost her husband (Jeff Daniels). She feels like she needs to nurture her own life even though all the lives of her family are being affected by the divorce. She sometimes over ignores the needs of her children in her attempts to be self satisfied. The older son (Jesse Eisenburg) is trying to get the approval of both his parents. He needs it desperately. He needs people to approve of him. However, both his parents ignore him as they struggle through their own problems. The youngest son (Owen Kline) feels the pains that any young boy feels as his parents divorce. Because his parents ignore him he has the opportunity to creatively try and drown his feelings through various odd habits. Obviously the destruction of this family and the family member's obsessive selfishness are what drive the drama. Their is some comedy in the situations the family members find themselves. For such a smart and talented family they just can't see what they are doing to themselves and the other family members. However, they start to see it towards the end of the movie, but the movie doesn't fully resolve the conflict. Classic Baumbach/Anderson.

The movie won the Director's Award at Sundance. It also was the official selection at the New York Film Festival. Both awards were won in 2005.

Other information:
Jeff Daniels is in State of Play alongside Russell Crowe, Helen Mirren, and Ben Affleck.
Jeff Daniels is going to be in a movie titled Away We Go. It is being released in June. It is an indie movie that includes the likes of John Krasinski (The Office), Maggie Gyllenhaal, Allison Janney (The West Wing), Catherine O'Hara, and Jim Gaffigan. It looks like a good one. I am going to keep an eye out for it.
Laura Linney is going to star in Sympathy for Delicious. It is being directed by Mark Ruffalo and stars Mark Ruffalo (I think he is a great actor), Orlando Bloom, and Juliette Lewis,
Jesse Eisenberg is in the movie Adventureland that was just released. I don't know if I want to see Adventureland or Observe and Report this weekend.
Owen Kline is the son of Kevin Kline.

Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle

Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle
is the funniest stupid comedy movie there is. I wanted to list it today in case you had a bad week and needed a good mindless laugh this weekend. If you do...this is the movie.

Harold (John Cho) is a nerdy Asian accountant who is desperately in love with his neighbor (Paula Garces). However, he finds himself struck dumb every time he is in her presence even though she gives him subtle hints that she likes him. Harold's roommate is Kumar (Kal Penn) who is an Indian chronic weed smoker who is over confidant in himself. After a hard work day and another blown opportunity with the girl, Harold, needs a break. Kumar suggests they smoke weed to relax. After some weed both Harold and Kumar start to get the munchies. A White Castle commercial comes on the TV and Harold and Kumar decide to go to White Castle to satisfy their hunger. However, all sorts of mayhem ensue prohibiting them from getting to the White Castle and their journey becomes much more than a search for food. They finally overcome all their obstacles and arrive at the White Castle, where Harold and Kumar have the PERFECT meal. Harold even overcomes his fear of talking with his neighbor and sets up a date with her.

Like I said if you need a good mindless laugh check this movie out. If you want something with some depth don't check this movie out.

I admit that I picked this movie tonight because I wanted to talk about Kal Penn in the other information section that I do. Do you guys watch House M.D.? If so, did you see Monday's episode? Well, it is crazy and Kal Penn's character is no longer on the show.

Other Information:
Kal Penn's character Dr. Kutner on House M.D. committed suicide in a daring and moving episode last Monday. The reason for the suicide is because Kal Penn accepted a position in the Obama administration in the Office of Public Relations. Kal campaigned for Obama and I guess he wants to take it further than just talking about the man. He has stated that he is not quiting acting for good he just wanted to pursue this opportunity due to his interest in public service. Courageous in my opinion to give up a lucrative job on a popular show where your character is well liked by viewers to follow a passion for public service.
John Cho is playing Hikaru Sulu in the new Star Trek movie.
Anthony Anderson has the best one liner in this movie. If you want to know what it is, and it is worth knowing, you will have to watch this movie.
Malin Akerman recently starred as Laurie Jupiter in Watchmen. Have you all seen Watchmen? If not I would recommend seeing it.

Exercise

So, I have started an exercise routine over the last two weeks that is either going to help me lose some weight or KILL ME!!!! Sometimes I think that the latter is the only possible outcome.

I joke, I joke. It has actually been very helpful (although painful). You know how you get it in your mind that you want to lose some weight, feel better, or get more healthy through exercise and/or diet from time to time? Well, in late January I felt that way. Let me tell you how it went down because I have lost 30 pounds since late January.

So, there was this person I knew that was trying to diet. However, it was impossible for them to diet because everyone around them was not dieting (I agree it is not easy to eat healthy when everyone around you is eating all that wonderful tasting crap that we so often consume). They began to try and recruit people to start dieting as well, so that they could stick to their diet. I thought about it and blew the person off a couple of times.

A couple of weeks later, though, I began to feel like I never really had very much energy and that my joints were painful after a lot of walking or standing on my feet (sometimes not even after a lot of walking or standing on my feet). At about the same time I went to see my doctor for my annual physical and he told me my cholesterol was too high. I put 2 and 2 together and decided that I needed to start a diet and probably an exercise regimen.

I knew that the biggest challenge to any diet/exercise routine was too much too fast. I started to think about what small step I could take to ease into it. After that small step I would add the next small step and so on until I was starting to make real progress.

At the time I was drinking Dr. Pepper (the best soda in the whole world!!!!!!) like 50 times a day. As hard as it was I decided to quit the soda (except for once a week, I love that time of the week, the nectar of the gods as some say). I stopped drinking soda for two or three weeks. I lost about 4 pounds doing that and I already started feeling better (not a ton, but it was noticeable).

The next small step was that I was going to eat a healthy dinner every day (lunch with the work buddies was too much for me to turn it into something healthy, so I started with dinner). I really like those Healthy Select soups. They only have 120 calories per serving. So, I started to just eat soup for dinner. After 2 weeks of that and cutting out the extraneous snacks I lost another 6 pounds. So, I was down 10 pounds after about a month and a week.

Going into March I decided that I couldn't still eat 1500 calories at lunch and accomplish my goals. So, I did what I never thought I would (especially if you knew me from my teenage years and on up) I looked up nutritional information on the internet for the various fast food and sit down restaurants I ate lunch at. I picked out a HEALTHY meal at every place I knew I might go for lunch. I stuck to that meal. In another two or three weeks I was down another 5 pounds. Go 15 pounds!

It had been two months and I had lost 15 pounds. It wasn't just the weight loss. I was feeling better and I was eating healthier. I had more energy, more stamina, etc. I really did feel physically better than I had (significantly) two months prior. I started this diet weighing 280 lbs though, and I wasn't happy with 265 lbs. So, I needed the next step.

Exercise reared its ugly head. You work all day sitting in a chair staring at a computer monitor. You then go home tired (oddly enough) and sit down and watch tv or play on the wii. I was getting almost no exercise at all throughout the day/week (hence the 280 lbs). So, starting an exercise routine was tough. I am not going to lie to you it wasn't easy even getting to a respectable workout. I was exercising 20 minutes and stopping. You are not going to lose weight doing that. So, I worked everyday doing just a little more at a little bit of a faster pace until I got up to 1 hour workouts. I have lost another 15 lbs because of those workouts.

I am down to 250 lbs from the 280 lbs I started out at. I feel so much better and even look physically thinner now. I went to this website that said if you burn 500 calories a workout (7 days a week) you should lose at least 2 lbs a week. I am on the 500 calorie workout now and hope to continue to lose at least 2 lbs a week until I get to 200 lbs. So, 50 lbs at 2 lbs a week means 25 weeks. So, hopefully in 6 months time I am down to 200 lbs. That is my goal, although I don't think it will take that long because I have been losing more than 2 lbs a week.

Pretty cool, huh? I can't tell you how important taking small steps is in starting a diet/exercise regimen when you're not used to it. There will be a point where you start to feel good about the diet and exercise and will naturally feel like you want to step it up. Until you get to that point, you have to set up small baby steps that you can accomplish. It took me about 9 weeks until I felt like I wanted to naturally step my game up.

If you're thinking about dieting and/or exercising give my advice a shot. It might save you from some really prohibitive painful workouts and/or burning out in a week. If you are trying to lose some weight or get more healthy...good luck!!!

Munich

Munich is a Steven Spielberg film about Black September and the Israeli response to it. 11 Israeli athletes were killed in the Olympic Village during the 1972 olympics at the hands of Palestinian terrorists. In response to the assassinations the Israeli government creates a group of Mossad agents to hunt down and kill the masterminds behind the terrorist plot.

Munich was directed by Steven Spielberg. The cast was excellent. The cast composed primarily of Eric Bana, Daniel Craig, Ciaran Hinds, and Geoffrey Rush. The action thriller component of the movie keeps you on edge the whole movie.

I really appreciate this movie not only for the historical implications but beacuse there is a bigger issue that runs through the dna of this movie. That is what does it mean to be Jewish and to what lengths do you protect your faith and your identity from those that seek to destroy it.

The Israeli government recruits 5 Mossad agents for the task. They come from different backgrounds and the actions they take to hunt down those responsible affects each one differently. Eric Bana's character is a war hero who has to leave a pregnant wife behind to take the assignment. At first he is convinced of the moral righteousness of his mission. However, as he tracks down and kills the people responsible (many who have families and beliefs of their own) he starts to second guess is assassination responsibilities. He then becomes haunted by his victims and that haunting turns into paranoia. He starts to see that as he kills each individual responsible that someone else starts to hunt him down in revenge for killing their Palestinian leader, brother, etc. He becomes so paranoid that everyone is out to kill him and his family in retribution for the Palestinians he killed that it drives him crazy and almost makes him forsake his Jewish State and beliefs. Daniel Craig plays a character who is never quite sure that what they are doing is correct. Ciaran Hinds is a true believer in what they are doing but has a fatal flaw. The bomb technician in the group is haunted already by all his past misdeeds. Each character has their own story. The movie does a pretty good job of exploring all of them.

The main issue is that everyone feels good about revenge. Especially, justified revenge. However, violence begets violence. And in the thousands of years old war between the Palestinians and the Jews no one is winning. They are only taking turns killing each other for a slight they received in the past from the other. It raises the question, who committed the first offense? Can anyone remember what started the argument? Can you get past a conflict that has lost the when and why of it? Can you ever forgive thousands of years of killing each other no matter who was wronged first or why?

I recommend Munich to anyone. For having been directed by a Jewish director I thought that this movie was well created to show the struggle on both sides of the conflict. Spielberg didn't necessarily take sides and I appreciate that. It must be difficult to do. If you are interested in getting a more profound understanding of the Jewish Palestinian conflict this movie is for you. Of course there is some artistic license, etc. But, overall this was a fantastic movie that can teach you about history and human nature. It really is an awesome movie. I want to put in a small plug for Ciaran Hinds. I immensley enjoy this actor and his work. Check out some of his other movies, most importantly The Sum of all Fears, when you get a chance.

Other information:
Steven Spielberg is directing and producing a movie about Abraham Lincoln. That should be interesting. It is on my list of movies to see when they come out.
Eric Bana will be in Judd Apatow's new movie Funny People that also stars Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, and Jonah Hill. This ought to be a GOOD one!
Daniel Craig is going to be in another Bond movie. Big surprise right?!?
Ciaran Hinds will be in a movie called The Debt which is about a group of vigilantes trying to bring a Nazi war criminal to justice.
Ciaran Hinds is also rumored to play Aberforth Dumbledore (Albus Dumbledore's brother) in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows.

Something a Little Different

So I decided to do something a little bit different tonight.

When I first set this blog up, I thought I would talk about myself and some of my passions/hobbies. However, when I started writing things about me in my first post I became skeptical. I didn't want to say stuff that would be interpreted in any way other than what I intended. I know that is practically impossible. If you ask 10 different people for an opinion on something, you will get 10 different opinions. So, I decided to just stick to movies. That was impartial, impersonal, etc.

Well, I am going to dive into the personal a bit and see how it goes.

This year has been a strange year for me. You know how you can watch a movie or listen to a song about life? You know how someone gets cancer in a movie and there are a certain amount of responses to that news? There aren't 400 responses there are only 3 or 4. I don't know if that makes sense or not. Anyway, when something "life changing" happens in your own life it is almost surreal. You think you will have one of the responses that "you are supposed to have". Like if someone dies that you love you are supposed to be sad, right? Well, sometimes its not like that at all. Sometimes it is just surreal and nearly unexplainable. I have had some unfortunate things happen to me this year. And it is as if I am watching someone else's life unravel and not my own. It is as if I am a character in a fictional movie that I just watch from a distance. The surreal part (as if not being merely a "character" in your own life isn't surreal) is that you know it is you and yet you have this distinct feeling that you are watching someone else. I think the fact that you feel 45 different emotions (sometimes 2 conflicting feelings at the same time) about an event makes it surreal as well. It is all very strange. I don't want to get into specifics, which would probably help explain this concept better, but suffice it to say not everything is as it seems as life unfolds.

I guess that is wisdom though. I used to hate when people said that I would "understand" something when I was older. But, you don't get wisdom without experience. And experience comes with time. I have learned a lot from the events of this year. I believe I am wiser than I was before the events.

I just want to tell everyone out there reading this to just take a breath and enjoy what you do. Always try and gain perspective. Always love those you are supposed to love. Always work hard like you are supposed to. Always treat your health with respect. Enjoy it as you do it, but try and keep things in perspective. Maybe that way you won't have any regrets. I can't promise everything will work out if you do all the "right things" (because sometimes they won't), but you might get through the tough times with no regrets.

I want to take the time and thank my family for all of their love and support. They are always there for me. It makes me mad that I thought they were lame and intrusive when I was a teenager.

I also want to send a shout out to Brandon. He has been an awesome friend. I can't wait to get down to his new place and hang out with him and his wife. Thanks for listening Brandon and for thinking I am cool and worth hanging out with. I am not that cool, but I try...haha. See you soon, it will be a blast!

Well, that is enough about me and my feelings *said in a lame drawn out voice* for one night. Now, I am fine. I don't want a flood of emails or comments all concerned about me. I am fine, I repeat, I am fine. I just wanted to thank some people and tell everyone that life is so surreal sometimes.

Oh, one last thing. I went to some blogs last night. Blogs are of the devil (I know I am writing on one now)! Talk about surreal. Can you believe that everyone has turned out the way they have? I wouldn't of been able to call it! Haha. Also, you start looking at one blog and that blog takes you to another blog and then another and another and so on. Then it's 4:00 AM and you want to kill yourself for staying up so late looking at billions of blogs. So, blogs are the work of the devil. If it is 4:00 AM and you are reading this, turn your computer off and go to bed!

Good night everyone! Say thank you and I love you to someone by tomorrow night!

I Love You, Man

I've seen I Love You, Man twice since it's release. It is a pretty good movie. There were some moments during the movie where I was laughing so hard that I thought they were going to kick me out of the movie.

The cast was pretty dang good. You have Paul Rudd, Jason Segel, Rashida Jones, Andy Samberg, Jamie Pressly (SOOOOO HOT!!), J.K. Simmons, and Jane Curtin. I am loving Jason Segel. I don't know (still) how I feel about his sitcom How I Met Your Mother. I loved his other recent movie Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Paul Rudd as usual did a fantastic job. I actually think that this is one of his best performances because he has to play a self-doubting, ackward character in the movie. So, it wasn't just being funny for his character. Rashida Jones (from The Office) also did a pretty good job. Her characters are kind of all the same.

The movie is about Peter Klaven (Paul Rudd). Peter asks his girlfriend Zooey (Rashida Jones) to marry him. She says yes. As they start to plan their wedding, Zooey starts to worry that the wedding parties will be uneven because Peter has no real guy friends. Peter overhears Zooey's concern as he eavesdrops on Zooey talking during a girl's night out. The search begins for Peter to find guy friends, and hopefully, a best man (some hilariously awkward moments). Peter's adventures in finding a guy friend bring him accross the path of Sydney Fife (Jason Segel). They instantly hit it off (in the craziest ways, of course). They hit it off so much that Peter and Zooey start to fight over how much time Peter spends with Sydney. Peter has to tell Sydney that he can't hang out anymore because of the strain it is putting on his relationship with Zooey. Zooey has a change of heart and Sydney makes it to the wedding. Happy ending for everyone.

The plot seems a little cheesy (which it is) but the situational comedy is priceless. I almost never see a movie twice in the theaters. So, I recommend I Love You, Man for sure. I just hope that the economy hasn't put such a pinch on your wallett that you can't get out the movie theater and watch it right now. And if it has, isn't it time to loosen up, spend the money, and laugh for an hour and a half. Comedy is priceless right now, you know?

Well, good weekend to you all!

Downfall

Tonight I went with a foreign film called Downfall or in German Der Untergang. The movie is in German with English subtitles. Now I am not going to lie this is a depressing movie. Believe it or not I watched it on Christmas Day. I wouldn't recommend watching it on such a festive holiday, but I would recommend watching it.

As you can tell from the image it is a movie about Adolf Hitler. As you are probably aware as the allied forces were closing in on Hitler and Berlin was nearing collapse Hitler was hiding out in the Wolf's Liar. He was there with his lover Eva Braun. This movie documents what happens as is told by Hitler's personal secretary Traudl Junge. According to her account (which has neither been proven or disproven) Hitler and Braun commit suicide in the Wolf's Liar. The movie also follows the lives of several other Nazis and their families. Each one reacts to the fall of their beloved Third Reich in different ways.

Downfall was nominated in 2005 for the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film. It didn't win the Oscar but was definately worthy of the nomination. It did win a Bambi for Best German Film. It won an audience award at the Bavarian Film Awards. And, amongst others, it won a Best Actor award (Bruno Ganz) at the Santa Barbara Film Festival.

Anyway, if you have a pension for history and a good old fashion drama Downfall is for you. Don't let the fact that the movie is spoken in German scare you away. Foreign film takes some getting used to, even when you speak the language, but it is worth it. Now go check it out!

Reign Over Me

I have just discovered the awesomeness that is Boston Legal. You know the show about lawyers and their very sordid and dramatic personal lives. The show stars William Shatner, James Spader, Candice Bergen, amongst others. I just watched an episode where a hot actress shoots a papparrazi and is then represented by Denny Crane (William Shatner's character). Denny in usual fashion is more interested in representing her because of her looks than because of her very real legal problems. In his initial interview with the actress he keeps getting caught staring at her boobs. Alan Shore (James Spader's character) tries to explain why Denny is doing so so unabashedly by saying, "his eyes are bigger than his shame". Classic Boston Legal! I am sure it is better in the actual episode than on this blog but none the less.

Well, onto the movie the of day.

Reign Over Me is a drama starring Adam Sandler, Don Cheadle, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Liv Tyler.

It's one of those post 9/11 movies. Now before you stop reading, because let's be frank, most post 9/11 movies are either aweful or unbelievably sad, this movie is an exception. An amazing exception. Also, Adam Sandler has tried to branch into other genres with little success in my view (Spanglish was excellent, though). He did, however, do a pretty good job being dramatic in this movie. So, don't let the post 9/11 thing or Adam Sandler in a drama scare you away from this movie.

The rest of the cast did an amazing job as usual. I was particularily impressed with Don Cheadle.

Reign Over Me was directed and written by Mike Binder. He also plays one of the characters in the movie and does a suprisingly good job in his role. Some directors have no place acting in their own movies. I actually think it is refreshing, however, when a director can pull it off. So, congrats Mike Binder.

Reign Over Me is about a man, Charlie Fineman, (Adam Sandler) who lost his family in one of the planes that crashed during 9/11. It starts out following a family man, Alan Johnson, (Don Cheadle) who sees his old college roommate Charlie Fineman ride by on a motorized push scooter. Alan Johnson tracks down Charlie Fineman after this encounter and comes to find out that Charlie is not handling the loss of his family very well. However, Alan starts to find Charlie's escape techniques from reality liberating as he is having problems with his wife (Jada Pinkett Smith) and the rut his family life is turning into. As Alan latches on to Charlie because he invies Charlie's freedom, he relizes he needs to help Charlie get therapy. Alan takes Charlie to see a psychologist in his medical building (Liv Tyler). In due time Charlie opens up to the psychologist and talks about his lost family and the pain associates with his loss. In doing so he suffers a mental breakdown. Charlie's episode starts out suicidal and ends up with him in jail. He has to go before a judge to establish his competancy and again is forced to deal with his past (especially his in-laws). With the help of Alan, his psychologist, and a stray friend Charlie starts to heal his wounds. In the process Charlie touches the lives of everyone around them. Charlie especially helps everyone to prioritize and recognize what is most important in life.

As usual, I whole heartedly recommend this movie to anyone. Be sure to give it a chance because it is one of those movies that will change your perspective in life.

Other information:
Mike Binder will be acting in a movie being released in July entitled, The Private Lives of Pippa Lee.
Adam Sandler will be acting alongside Seth Rogen in a new Judd Apatow movie called Funny People. I can't wait for that one. Judd Apatow, Seth Rogen, and Adam Sandler in a comedy has to be priceless. The cast also includes Jonah Hill, Leslie Mann, Jason Schwartzman, and Sarah Silverman.
Adam Sandler's production company is called Happy Madison. Obviously based off of his movies Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison.
Don Cheadle is replacing Terrence Howard as Col. James 'Rhodey' Rhodes in Iron Man 2
